What is Fading Support?
Fading support is the staged, deliberate removal of worked examples, models and scaffolds as students become more competent.
When scaffolding learning, the most effective teachers plan for the removal process. For example, a worked example gets shown once, a writing frame gets handed out, and both quietly become permanent fixtures because the teacher did not decide when they should come down. Fading is the missing half of scaffolding — it is not a separate idea, but the part of the sequence that turns temporary support into independent capability.
The clearest evidence for how to do this well comes from Alexander Renkl and Robert Atkinson's research on backward fading. Working from worked examples in maths and probability, they tested what happens when you remove worked-out solution steps gradually rather than jumping straight from a full example to an unsupported problem:
Step 1 — Full example: the teacher models the complete solution, every step shown.
Step 2 — Fade the last step: the final step is left blank; the student supplies it.
Step 3 — Fade the last two steps: more of the ending is removed.
Step 4 — Independent problem: no steps are provided at all.

The word "backward" matters. Renkl and Atkinson found that removing the end of the worked solution first, produced the strongest results. This is the opposite of what most teachers do instinctively, which is to let students attempt the first step and keep the later, harder steps modelled for longer.
Fading sits inside the broader idea of Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) — Pearson and Gallagher's 1983 model of moving from teacher modelling to guided practice to independent application. The GRR is often flattened into a rigid "I do, we do, you do" script performed once per lesson. Fading is the specific, evidence-backed technique underneath it: a responsive staged withdrawal of support that can happen across a single task, a sequence of lessons, or a whole topic.

Here's a bulletproof list of what fading support IS and IS NOT:

The same as making the work easier over time — that's differentiation drift, not fading; the goal stays fixed, only the support changes
A one-off event — fading can and often should stretch across several lessons, not one 20-minute sequence
Removing support all at once — the abrupt jump from full example to blank page is precisely what backward fading avoids
Optional once scaffolding is in place — a scaffold with no fading plan is just a permanent prop

Why Does Fading Support Matter?
Benefit 1 — Fewer Students Quietly Give Up
Renkl, Atkinson and Große (2004) compared backward fading with the traditional approach of studying a complete worked example before attempting a similar problem independently. They found that the traditional approach created a sudden jump in difficulty—from seeing every step completed to solving the entire problem alone. When students became stuck, they often recognised the problem but simply moved on without resolving it.
These "ignored impasses" were linked to poorer performance on both similar and new problems. Backward fading avoids this cliff edge by increasing the challenge gradually, giving students a better chance to work through difficulties rather than abandon them.

Author and educator Tom Sherrington describes the same idea with a simpler image: modelling as a baton handover, where the exchange only works if both runners hold on together for a moment before letting go. He explains: "A baton exchange is only successful if the receiver gets a firm grip... learning doesn't form with knowledge leaping from the teacher to the student." — Tom Sherrington (2020)
Benefit 2— It Works on Harder, Unfamiliar Questions Too
Across both university and high school students, backward fading consistently outperformed the traditional approach of studying a worked example before attempting a similar problem. Students not only performed better on similar questions, but also on unfamiliar questions that required them to adapt what they had learned. That's significant because many teaching strategies improve performance on familiar tasks but don't transfer to new ones. Backward fading improved both, without requiring any extra learning time.

Benefit 3 — One Extra Question Makes It Stronger
Atkinson, Renkl and Merrill (2003) tested whether fading could be strengthened further by prompting students to name the underlying principle behind each worked step they saw — a simple self-explanation prompt, not an elaborate one. Students who received these prompts alongside backward fading outperformed those who received fading alone, on both near and far transfer, in two separate experiments — one with university students, one with high schoolers.

The two techniques stacked cleanly, with no interference between them. Fading tells students what to work on, whereas prompting for the principle tells them what to notice while they do it.

How Do I Fade Support Effectively?
Fading isn't a single decision to "let go" — it can be organised into a five-part sequence that governs how much support is on the page at any given moment, and when the next piece comes off. The steps below follow Renkl and Atkinson's backward fading procedure, adapted for the classroom.

1. Model the Full Example First
| Narrate every decision aloud as you write, not just what you're doing but why — "I'm doing this first because…" rather than a silent demonstration. Keep the full example visible throughout (visualiser, board, or slide) so students can look back at any point rather than relying on memory. Hold off on questions here; checking for understanding too early interrupts the one thing this step protects, which is an uninterrupted view of the complete method from start to finish. | "Watch the whole thing first. I'm not asking you to do anything yet — just follow how each step leads to the next." |
2. Fade the Last Step
| Present the same type of problem with every step shown except the final one, and ask students to supply only that. This works because the hardest part — getting started — is still fully visible as a reference; students are completing a nearly-finished thought, not generating one from nothing. Reveal the correct final step immediately after they attempt it, so they can self-check. | "Everything's done except the last line. You finish it — what does the answer have to be?" |
3. Prompt the Underlying Principle
| At each worked step still visible on the page, pause and require students to name the rule or principle it demonstrates before you move on. Keep this fast and low-stakes: a mini-whiteboard flash or a show of fingers against a set of options on the board. The value isn't in lengthy discussion, it's in forcing retrieval of the underlying principle. | "Before we move on — what rule made that step true? Don't just tell me the number, tell me why." |
4. Increase the Blanks Gradually
| Move from one blank to two, then to only the opening step remaining. Each version should read as a small step up in the same task, not a different task altogether — keep the surface features (numbers, context, cover story) varied but the underlying structure and demand level identical from one version to the next. If errors spike at any stage, don't push on to the next fade — repeat a task at the current level of support before increasing it again. | "This time, only the first line is done for you. 5. Hand Over
| Give a new problem of the same type with nothing modelled at all. Circulate while students work rather than moving straight on to the next part of the lesson — this step is your check as much as theirs. If errors are widespread, don't treat the fade as having failed outright; reintroduce the last faded step for the whole class and try again from there. | "No support this time. The underlying shift is small to describe and easy to skip under time pressure: fade the end before the beginning, ask why before asking what, and increase the gap in small steps rather than one. Support that never gets removed was never really scaffolding — it was just the lesson.
