What is Classroom Layout?

Classroom layout is the physical arrangement of furniture, walls and sightlines in your room, and these choices can influence both behaviour and learning. Research from the HEAD project found that classroom design accounted for 16% of the variation in pupils’ learning progress (Barrett, Davies, Zhang & Barrett, 2015), while Wheldall and Lam found that moving from table groups to rows doubled on-task behaviour from around 35% to 70% (Wheldall & Lam, 1987).

Classroom layout is a combination of several physical choices and strategic decisions:

  • Desk Arrangement: How desks are organised for independent work, discussion and collaboration.

  • Seating Choice: Where students sit and whether places are assigned or self-selected.

  • Wall Displays: What students can see around them and how much visual information competes for attention.

  • Sightlines: How clearly the teacher and students can see one another and the main teaching space.

  • Lighting: The amount and quality of natural and artificial light in the room.

  • Space: How easily the teacher and students can move around and access every part of the room.

In typical DistillED fashion, here's what classroom layout is — and what it isn't:

Why Does Classroom Layout Matter?

Two classrooms can run the same lesson and produce different learning simply because of what's around the students while they're in it. Seating arrangement is the clearest example: in Wheldall and Lam's study, moving from table clusters to rows didn't just improve on-task behaviour — disruption dropped to a third of its previous rate, across three separate classes.

Who chooses the seat matters just as much as the shape of the seating:

“Disruptive behavior during group seating occurred at twice the rate when students chose their seats than when the teacher chose. During individual seating, disruptive behavior occurred more than three times as often when the students chose their seats.”

Classroom walls matter too, and in the opposite direction from what a lot of classrooms actually do. Fisher, Godwin and Seltman (2014) taught the same science lessons to kindergarteners in rooms with heavily decorated walls and in sparse ones. In the decorated room, students were off-task 39% of the time versus 28% in the sparse room and their learning gains nearly halved, from 33% down to 18%.

More display isn't automatically more support; past a point, it competes for the same attention your teaching needs. Be strategic about what sits within students' instructional sightlines. If a display is primarily decorative, move it to the back or sides of the room. The same applies to clocks: positioned behind the teacher or whiteboard, they can become an unnecessary distraction. Move the clock to the back instead — you can still see it, while students are less tempted to count down the minutes.

The relationship between wall displays and attention also appears to be non-linear. Research examining classroom design suggests that both very sparse and heavily covered walls are associated with lower levels of on-task behaviour, with the strongest predicted levels occurring when roughly 20–30% of available wall space is covered. The message isn't to strip classrooms bare, but to avoid visual overload: some display can support the learning environment; too much can begin to compete for students' attention.

Sightlines do similar work from the management side. Doug Lemov names this directly in Teach Like a Champion: Radar and Be Seen Looking (Technique 53) — a teacher's ability to reliably see what's happening across the whole room — paired with Circulate (Technique 25), the deliberate habit of moving past every row rather than teaching from one spot. Both depend entirely on layout. A teacher can't scan a seat they can't see, or reach a student they can't get to without climbing over a bag.

Proximity is also incredibly important because it affects how hard students actually work. Desender and Van den Bussche (2015) found that students paired with a partner exerting more effort on a task increased their own effort too, even on a completely different task. Forrin and colleagues (2021) found the same pattern for attention: students paired with an attentive partner self-reported higher attentiveness, took more notes, and remembered more lecture content than those paired with an inattentive one — and the effect held even when the partner sat behind them, out of sight. Who sits next to whom isn't just about keeping the peace. It's a lever on effort and attention in its own right.

None of this means the room does the teaching for you. It means the room either protects the attention your teaching depends on, or it quietly taxes it before you've started.

How Do I Set Up My Classroom?

None of this requires a budget or a summer of redecorating. It requires five deliberate decisions, made before students arrive and revisited across the year as walls fill up and habits drift.

Here's what all five look like in one room:

1. Choose Your Default Arrangement by Task


→ Purpose: Match room shape to what most lessons actually demand.

Rows suit independent focus and quiet work; small groups suit brainstorming and collaborative tasks; a horseshoe gets attention while still allowing interaction. Pick the default based on what you run most often, then deliberately switch for the rest.

"For the two lessons a week that are genuinely discussion-based, we move to groups — the other three stay in rows."

2. Create a Seating Plan with A/B Partners


→ Purpose: Remove the single biggest driver of low-level disruption before term starts.

Letting students choose their own seats roughly doubles disruption in group seating and triples it in individual seating, compared with a teacher-assigned plan. Arrange students in A/B partners ready for paired-talk.

"The plan's on the screen — find your name, find your seat. Find out if you’re Person A or Person B. Thank you.”

3. Place Students Deliberately, Not Alphabetically


→ Purpose: Use proximity to lift effort and attention, not just to keep the peace.

A student working near someone visibly on-task tends to work harder themselves; a distractible student who can see an attentive peer shows better note-taking and recall.

"I'm not going alphabetical this year — my least-focused students are going where they can see someone modelling attention."

4. Build a Sightline and Circulation Space to Every Seat


→ Purpose: Make it possible to scan the whole room and reach any student in a few steps, without squeezing past furniture.

Walk the room empty before students arrive. If there's a desk you can't reach without climbing over a bag or three other chairs, that's a gap you'll avoid — and so will your management.

"There was one seat I couldn't get to without climbing over a bag. Moved it before Monday."

5. Clear a Wall and Let in the Light


→ Purpose: Give working memory a visual rest zone, and use natural light wherever the room allows it.

Sit in a student seat and note what's competing with the board for attention — then check whether furniture or displays are blocking a window. Natural light was the single biggest factor in Barrett's research, accounting for roughly half the overall design effect; a heavily decorated room measurably increases off-task time and reduces learning gains compared with a sparser one.

"Everything came off the wall behind where I stand to teach, and I moved the bookshelf that was blocking half the window."

None of these five steps cost anything beyond time, and none of them require you to abandon group work, displays, or a room that feels warm and lived-in. They just ask you to make each choice on purpose, rather than inheriting whatever the room looked like when you walked in.
